Introduction:

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is aglobal problem with increasing prevalence and poor outcomesespecially in developing countries. Quality of life assessment (QoL) is animportant aspect of CKD care but there is still paucity of data on QoL ofCKD patients in Nigeria and Africa. Some clinical and laboratory factorsinherent in CKD patients have been shown to affect their QoL.AIM:To assess the clinical and laboratory factors that affect the QoL ofCKD patients.

Methods: This was a cross sectional study that included 100 CKD pa-tients (20 per stage) at UNTH, Enugu. Sociodemographic, clinical andlaboratory data were obtained for each patient. Kidney disease qualityof life questionnaire (KDQOL -SF36)which was interviewer admin-istered and hadfive domainswas used to obtain information on QoL.Data was analysed using SPSS version 21.

Results: There were 53 males and 47 females. Mean age was49.7912.10 years (males¼50.7312.41, females¼48.7011.78 years).Pearsons correlation analysis showed that higher haemoglobin level, estimated glomerularfiltration rate (GFR), serum albumin, serum bi-carbonate and calcium predicted good QoL. On the other hand, pres-ence of dyspnoea, oedema, elevated serum potassium and urinealbumin- creatinine ratio predicted poor QoL. Hypertension and heartfailure were also associated with poor QoL.

Conclusions:

A number of clinical and laboratory parameters affect QoLin CKD patients and these parameters should be given special consid-eration in the management of this group of patients
