KCRI offers a diversified and flexible exposure to both clinical and biomedical research areas in a typical tropical setting. We accept graduate students, post doc students and research attachments for scientists as well as undergraduate students between 3 months and above (4 weeks and above for undergraduate students from Tanzania and other East African countries). In general, we admit students with and without experience in research or the topic of attachment, but they should have had theoretical training in research or the topic of attachment. 

Our attachment program has been tailored to ensure that interns have an opportunity to work with and be mentored by experienced researchers and others. In addition, the interns will have the chance to interact with fellow researchers and/or students who are based at KCRI.

On their part, the interns are expected to contribute intellectually and technically in the research area they are engaged in the form of participating in research project/laboratory meetings, scientific forums and presenting their research findings. Interns are also expected to show initiative and take the lead in developing their own independent research questions and those who show outstanding initiative may be supported to apply for training grants from funding agencies.

We have a short procedure for applying for a research internship at KCRI, which involves completing a short application form.Due to the usually large number of applications received, you are advised to apply at least six months in advance of the expected starting time. For interns from Southern African countries, application can be made at least 3 months before expected starting date. Placement of elective students will be on a first come, first served basis in accordance with the receipt of your completed application form. 

KCRI provides logistical support to Elective Students, postdoctoral fellows and PhD students and research interns before and after arrival.We provide assistance with:

• The Visa application process
• Travelling arrangements
• Accommodation
• Opening of bank accounts
• Medical aid
• The registration procedure and Immigration matters

FEES:

International Applicants

For a 3-month attachment, a fee of $ 500.00 for research interns/post doc students, $300.00 for graduate students and $250 for undergraduate students will be charged to cater for administrative logistics during the intern’s stay at KCRI. 

Local Applicants

For a 3 month attachment, a fee of TSh500,000 for research interns/post doc students, TSh300,000 for graduate students and TSh100,000 for 4 weeks for undergraduate students. 

A COMPLETE application must include:

• A completed Application form or an online application form
• A short statement outlining why you would like to spend your elective at KCRI and how the experience will be of benefit to you.
• A letter of recommendation from a senior official in your home institution to confirm that you are affiliated to the institution.
• A copy of your brief curriculum vitae.
• A copy of your passport/African - national identity card. 
• Good quality 2 passport photographs

Field Visits 

In the case of 1-5, studies involve wide varieties of high throughput techniques in immunology, molecular biology, and functional genomics in addition to the standard techniques. Interns who would like field exposure on sample collection can opt for item/unit number 9. Multiple units of up to 3 may be selected for attachment.
