MICROBIOLOGY UNIT (BSL2 & BSL3)

BSL3 Laboratory

Equipped with BSC II cabinets, BD MGIT 960 System, Incubators, LED Fluorescent microscope, Cepheid GeneXpert MTB/RIF and Hain: MTBC, GenoType MTBDRplus and GenoType MTBDRsl, the BSL3 lab performs the following tests,

  • Sputum microscopy
    • Bright field microscopy (Ziehl-Neelsen method)
    • Fluorescence microscopy (Auramine method)
  • Tuberculosis screening
  • TB drug susceptibility testing
    • Phenotypic (MGIT 960 system: SIRE, PZA, Moxifloxacin)
    • Genotypic
  • Molecular speciation of M. tuberculosis Complex
  • Culture
    • Liquid (MGIT 960 system)
    • Solid (Lowenstein Jensen)

BSL2 Laboratory (human specimens)

The BSL 2 lab is equipped with a BD BacT/ALERT 3D system, CO2 Water-Jacketed Incubator, Bright field microscopes and a Class II Biosafety cabinet. Tests performed in this lab include but are not limited to:

  • Bacterial culture from biological specimens such as blood, stool, urine, swabs, etc.
  • Drug susceptibility testing
  • Microscopy
  • Biochemical tests e.g. Catalase test, coagulase test, API 20E, etc.

BSL2 Laboratory (Bacterial Zoonoses)

The BSL2 (Bacterial Zoonoses) laboratory is furnished with a CO2 Water-Jacketed Incubator, Bright field microscopes and a class II Biosafety cabinet. The lab offers the same procedures as of BSL2 (Human) lab. The contrast is on the origin of samples. While BSL2 (human) handles specimens of human origin, this lab handles specimens of animal origin. Currently the types of specimens this lab handles are those of bovine, ovine, rodents and caprine origin. These include Blood, milk and urine specimens.
